Residual waste

Residual waste - final stop gray garbage can

“Residual waste” – this name says it all, because it refers to all waste that is left over at the end: Everything that can no longer be used and cannot be recycled in any way belongs in the residual waste and therefore in the gray garbage can.

Our recommendations

Please note: Collection takes place from 5 a.m.

Please place the garbage cans in pairs on the street.

Further information is available here.

There is no way around the residual waste garbage can!

Wherever people live, a residual waste garbage can must be installed. The size of the garbage can depends on the number of people whose waste needs to be placed in it.

Bulky waste calculator

Important notes

Provide waste containers the evening before1

Individual items may not weigh more than 75 kg and may not be larger than 2.20 m x 1.50 m x 0.75 m! Small waste, even if packed in bags or boxes, cannot be taken away.

Bulky waste from other areas of origin, e.g. from commercial enterprises, public institutions and commercial properties (schools, clubhouses, retirement homes, etc.) are excluded from bulky waste collection.
Please note

Provide garbage cans the evening before

The Emsland district waste management company (AWB) asks all citizens to place their waste garbage cans at the roadside in a clearly visible position on the evening before the collection date.

Collection begins in the early hours of the morning – as early as 5:00 am. To ensure that your garbage can is emptied, it is essential that it is provided in good time. This is especially true if you have a public holiday on a Saturday, as the tours often start earlier than usual.

Please place the garbage cans next to each other in pairs to make it easier for the waste disposal vehicles. Only garbage cans that are placed correctly and on time can be emptied reliably.

You decide how to dispose of the waste paper you collect: The waste management company will provide you with a paper container free of charge on request. As usual, you can also take your waste paper to one of the 50 recycling centers in the district.

Our tips

Environmentally conscious action when it comes to waste paper:

  • Reduce your paper consumption!
  • Collect your waste paper!

FAQ / Frequently asked questions about bulky waste collection and the new regulations from 2020

Private households can request a bulky waste appointment if they are connected to the public waste disposal system. Registrations are accepted from both owners and tenants.

Bulky waste from commercial enterprises, public facilities and buildings (schools, clubhouses, etc.) is excluded from bulky waste collection. Delivery to a central landfill site for a fee is possible.

  • The following regulation is valid from 2020:
  • Every private residential property (except apartment buildings) with an assessed residual waste bin can make use of up to two free bulky waste collections per year. Only from the third registration within a calendar year is a fee of €70 charged for a bulky waste collection at the property.
  • Free delivery of bulky waste: by appointment only
  • As an alternative to collection, bulky waste can be delivered free of charge up to twice a year:
    • Order a delivery bill by telephone or e-mail from the AWB Customer Center (please allow 2 working days lead time!)
    • up to six cubic meters of bulky waste
    • up to twice per calendar year
    • free of charge at the central landfills Dörpen, Wesuwe or Venneberg
    • At the Flechum central landfill, the delivery quantity is limited to one cubic meter of bulky waste (free of charge) for capacity reasons !
  • Prior registration at the AWB customer center or online is mandatory!
  • Please note important information on free delivery!
  • Free delivery is only possible by handing in a delivery bill (in paper form) to the landfill staff
  • This delivery bill will be sent to you by e-mail within 2 working days, or by post on request.
  • Please show the delivery bill on your smartphone or print it out and bring it with you to the delivery.
  • Bulky waste can be pre-sorted (into wood, metal, electrical and other bulky waste) within 14 days of registration.
  • Without a printed delivery bill, delivery to the landfill will be subject to a fee (based on the currently applicable delivery fees).

In addition, the delivery of bulky waste to a central landfill site is possible all year round (subject to a fee, based on the currently applicable delivery fees).

  • A special regulation applies in apartment buildings. Here, the number of free bulky waste collections, or alternatively – free self-deliveries – per calendar year is linked to the number of residual waste garbage cans available there.
  • For each residual waste garbage can (or garbage can combination*) – not per home! – two free collections, or alternatively two self-deliveries, are possible per calendar year.
    • For each residual waste container (1.1 cubic meters), four free pick-ups or alternatively four self-deliveries are possible per calendar year
    • Example: There are three residual waste garbage cans at the property = 6 free collections or deliveries are possible at this property per calendar year.
  • Important notes!
    • Prior registration at the AWB customer center or online is also mandatory for self-delivery!
    • Registrations can be made by any tenant.
    • If the entitlement to free bulky waste registrations has already been exhausted, fees will be charged for the next registrant in the calendar year!
  • Tip: For smaller quantities of bulky waste, it is therefore advisable to announce the bulky waste date within the household community and to use the collection date together with other residents.

*garbage can combinations consisting of two residual waste garbage cans; however, the provision fee per household is only charged once: residual waste volume 160 liters; consisting of two 80-liter bins, residual waste volume 200 liters, consisting of one 120-liter and one 80-liter bin

  • From the third (and each subsequent) bulky waste collection in the calendar year, a fee of €70 per bulky waste collection is charged. This must be paid in advance, otherwise no disposal will be carried out.

    • Registration, by telephone at the AWB customer center or online Delivery of a fee notice (by e-mail or post)
    • Advance payment of the bulky waste fee by the applicant as soon as possible, at the latest within 5 working days
    • After receipt of payment, the AWB customer center will notify you of the date by e-mail or telephone

New from 2020: A minimum quantity of 1 cubic meter and a maximum quantity of 6 cubic meters must be complied with.

  • The bulky waste quantity calculator helps you to calculate your bulky waste quantity.
  • Please note: Individual pieces must not weigh more than 75 kg and must not be larger than 2.20 m x 1.50 m x 0.75 m!
  • Regulation for small quantities of less than one cubic meter of bulky waste:
    – For economic reasons, bulky waste collections at the residential address can only take place from a minimum quantity of one cubic meter.
Bulky waste deliveries to the central landfills Dörpen, Wesuwe and Venneberg, however, are possible without a minimum quantity up to a maximum quantity of six cubic meters.
Bulky waste deliveries to the Flechum central landfill are limited to a maximum quantity of one cubic meter of bulky waste for capacity reasons !
  • Regulation for large quantities of more than 6 cubic meters of bulky waste:
Ask for another bulky waste appointment
    • Alternatively: Register and have quantities of up to 6 cubic meters collected;
      – delivery of the excess quantity (subject to a fee, based on the currently applicable delivery fees) to the central landfill in Dörpen, Wesuwe or Venneberg; Flechum (up to a maximum of one cubic meter)
      – Waste electrical and electronic equipment: Free delivery possible at any central landfill; the electrical and electronic trade also accepts waste electrical and electronic equipment or disposes of it with the delivery of new equipment.
  • Please request your bulky waste appointment in good time, as collection appointments can be booked up quickly during busy periods!
  • In the case of a chargeable collection (from the third registration in the calendar year), a bulky waste appointment will only be allocated after receipt of payment. Therefore, please pay the bulky waste fee in advance, at the latest within five working days, in order to receive an appointment as quickly as possible.

The following rule of thumb applies to bulky waste: “movable household items” that are too large/too bulky to be disposed of in the residual waste bin can be registered for bulky waste collection: Small waste, even if packed in bags or boxes, will not be taken away!

That is taken away, that stays put:

Can bulky waste be collected from the property?

  • Please note that, for insurance reasons, employees of the waste disposal company are not permitted to enter or drive on private property.
  • If it is not possible to deliver the bulky waste to your property boundary, please call our Customer Center staff on 05931-599699.

Instructions for the correct provision of your bulky waste

  • Only place all items at the front boundary of the property (not behind hedges, fences on trailers or under the carport) on the evening before the collection date to prevent bulky waste from being added or rummaged through.

  • Please note that private properties may not be entered or driven on by waste disposal vehicles! If it is not possible to place the waste at the property boundary, please contact our staff at the Customer Center on 05931 44 300.
  • Pre-sort the registered items into electronic waste and normal bulky waste and provide both separately, as two different disposal vehicles will come.
  • Removable batteries (e.g. from cordless screwdrivers, laptops, cell phones) should be disposed of separately, e.g. by returning them to a specialist retailer, the mobile hazardous waste collection point or the nearest central landfill site

In general, the waste disposal company will take the amount of bulky waste that has been registered. For reasons of vehicle capacity utilization, it is not possible to take additional, unregistered bulky waste items.

Items that are not part of the bulky waste must be removed immediately from the storage location by the person who placed the order for bulky waste collection.

If you have any questions, please contact the AWB customer center.

You can change or cancel your bulky waste appointment up to three working days before the planned collection date at the AWB Customer Center during the office hours* listed below without forfeiting your entitlement to a free bulky waste collection or being charged the bulky waste order fee.
