Your biowaste - a raw material, not a residue.

Compost

Waste paper is a valuable raw material.

Organic waste, what is it actually?

Do you like breakfast eggs in the morning? Then you know that the shell is left over.

You can also put the bones to one side at lunchtime.

As you can see, we produce new waste every day in Emsland. And organic waste for the brown garbage can too, of course. This consists of animal and plant waste such as fruit and egg shells, bone and meat scraps, garden waste such as grass and cut flowers as well as tea and coffee filters.

What happens to organic waste?

What actually happens to the organic waste after your organic waste garbage can has been emptied? Is it simply taken to a nearby landfill site? No, it is completely recycled by the waste management company of the Emsland district – in two ways.

Power for plants from nature

Whether in Haselünne or Papenburg, Meppen or Emsbüren, gardening enthusiasts value compost as a natural source of fertilizer and humus. And this is exactly what is produced from your garden and kitchen waste. Perhaps you also use compost for your own garden or for the plants on your balcony.

Organic becomes organic

Your organic waste is simply pure energy. Your organic waste is not only suitable for the production of compost, but also as a source of energy. Thanks to our biomass fermentation plants in Dörpen and Lingen, environmentally friendly electricity is generated from natural raw materials and heat can be used to heat buildings, for example.

On average, between 80 and 140 m³ of biogas is obtained from 1 ton of biowaste. In turn, 1 m³ of biogas corresponds to 5 to 7.5 kWh and you can toast around 130 slices of bread with a single kWh.

How is good compost made?

Even if it sounds “crazy”: Your eggshells and your chop bones are life. So is your mown lawn, by the way. Why is that? It’s quite simple.

They are used to make compost, which grows the plants that you then put back on your table. A valuable cycle.

Similar to the compost heap in your garden – only on a much larger scale – your organic waste is processed in one of two biomass fermentation plants in the district of Emsland. The gas produced by the rotting process is converted into electricity and heat, while the remaining “fermentation residue” from the organic waste is further processed and decomposes until it becomes valuable, versatile Emsland compost.

Why separate organic waste?

Biowaste is therefore particularly valuable because all of its components are fully recycled here in Emsland. This makes collecting and separating worthwhile.

How does an organic waste fermentation plant actually work?

You now know the incredible potential of our organic waste, but how exactly does the fermentation process work? After your organic waste and that of other households has been collected, it is processed in the biomass fermentation plants in Lingen-Venneberg and Dörpen.

The biomass fermentation plants work according to the principle of dry fermentation. The organic waste is transported by wheel loader into gas-tight tunnels made of reinforced concrete, where it is sprayed with process water in the absence of oxygen. The decomposition of the organic waste produces gas. This gas is collected in a gas spittoon and fed into a combined heat and power plant. There it is converted into energy. Electricity and heat are generated. The electricity is fed into the local power grid and the heat is supplied to the school center and swimming pool in the example of the municipality of Dörpen.

The fermented organic waste, known as digestate, is transported by wheel loader into ventilated tunnels. There it is sanitized. The resulting fresh compost is then piled up in an open hall to form a windrow. After a maturing period of around 6 weeks, the material can be sieved off and is then available to us Emslanders as finished compost for use as fertilizer and humus.
